Adventures in Applique

April 18, 2010

To do the applique for the center block and border 3 of the Patchwork Posse Round Robin, I decided to do fusible applique.  Becky and Joy have designed such cute patterns!

I started by cutting out the pattern pieces and tracing around them onto a fusible web.

I soon discovered that a time saving technique was to place the pattern sheet under the fusible web and trace directly onto the paper backing of the fusible.  I then cut out the pieces and fused them onto the back side of various fabrics.

Once the fusible web cooled, I cut around the pieces and peeled the paper off.  I was then able to position the pieces on the quilt top and audition placement.

For the vines on Joy’s border, I placed the pattern sheet on a light box and under the background borber fabric.  I traced the lines of the vines with a dark green fabric marker.  This allowed me to place the heart and leave fabric pieces.  When I quilt the finished top, I plan on using dark green quilting thread to quilt over the drawn lines.

Once the applique pieces were in place, I was ready to press them to fuse them in position.  The problem arose of how to transfer the piece to the ironing board without displacing the pieces.  Solution – press them directly on the design wall.  I use a flannel flat sheet so I was able to briefly press the pieces so they would stay in place while being moved.  I was then able to move the piece to the ironing board for more pressing.  I will be adding more flowers to the center basket.
